REVIEW:

A single mother, living in a countryside rural town, noticed radical change in her son after some mysterious & disturbing events.

The premise is really promising. If you are bored after seeing a lot of logic less horror comedies, then this piece of art is for you.

I can't call Cronin's debut as most original & completely unique but I have to call it one of best horror films ever made.

Still it's unusual, not like the typical horror films available. It's dark, slow burning and artistic.

The film has two layers.
If you just want to enjoy a horror thriller, this is perfect. It's really scary, I mean very natural & consists some very original breathtaking moments. The cinematography always maintains a mysterious tone, one of the best cinematic treatment a horror film got. The setting is mysterious and a fear will always kept knocking on the door. A terrific screen presence from the cast, Seana is brilliant! The mix of ancient myth & modern horror was brilliant. The film always kept itself separate from others, avoiding all the nonsense horror film theories. The tension will embrace you, it will give you goosebumps but not leave you unsatisfying. It also has some loose end where audience got the scope to imagine it as per own.

But if you want more than just horror, it's more prominent. The ironical overtone were everywhere. At last it's a film where the mother is disturbed by observing the changes of her son! I find the mysterious hole in the forest and the scar on her head similar, both's origin is unknown & the both are the source of some evil energy. The film showed how imposter can attack a guardian less family in the disguise of innocence. It's also a feminine milestone, where a single mother fought against all the odds and finally succeeded to see the light. The old psycho lady, the clone of Sarah in the underground, the mirrors, the narrow path amidst the dense forest - all are symbolic.

Thus THE HOLE IN THE GROUND is more than a horror brilliance, it's memorable. The soundtrack score by Stephen McKeon deserves separate mention for it's brilliance. So absolutely recommended, it's one of the finest outcome of its genre & Lee Cronin is a talent to look forward !!
